The graphic shows confirmed cases of whale entanglement off the coast of California, Oregon and Washington from 1982 to 2024, with a few scattered cases in Mexico and Canada. Of the 636 total cases, 507 occurred in California, 45 in Oregon and 62 in Washington. Most whales survived the entanglement -- 550 were found alive and 86 were found dead. Humpback whales, highlighted in red, largely avoided entanglements for decades until around 2015, when their entanglements spiked and stayed high even as gray-whale entanglements held relatively steady.
